In Good Company: Hubb Club Volunteers Making a Difference

Since its launch nearly two years ago, The Hubb Club has been transforming lives across Stoke-on-Trent.

The project, created by The Hubb Foundation and delivered in partnership with five trusted organisations – Port Vale FC Foundation, Chell Area Family Action Group, The Indi Club, Middleport Matters, and Stoke City FC Community Trust is all about tackling loneliness and rebuilding confidence in the community.

Through home visits, friendly phone calls, help with shopping, or just encouraging someone to attend a local event, the Hubb Club brings simple but meaningful support directly to those who need it most.

The project has helped build bridges in places where people once felt alone, from mental health support to rediscovering independence. Proof that you don’t need grand gestures to make a lasting impact – sometimes, a warm drink and a chat are all it takes.

The stories shared by both volunteers and participants involved in the Hubb Club speak volumes – take a look at our YouTube video to meet just some of the people involved and hear how this project has made a difference to them.

Stoke City Football Club’s Community Trust has played a key role in the success of The Hubb Club – whether it’s inviting someone to a match, having a friendly chat, or simply offering a listening ear. Their volunteers have become a vital presence in many lives. One volunteer shared, “If you’re thinking about volunteering, you definitely should. You learn so much about yourself, gain new skills, and meet amazing people.” It’s a powerful reminder that community often begins with the smallest conversations.

Middleport Matters has seen The Hubb Club grow into a vital part of everyday life in the community. What started as simple check-ins with isolated residents has become a powerful support network. People are stepping out of their homes more often, forming new friendships, and finding reassurance in familiar faces. “This has become a really integral part of what we offer now,” shared a team member. “Just knowing someone is there can make all the difference.” With help from dedicated volunteers, many of whom have experienced isolation themselves, The Hubb Club continues to build confidence, boost wellbeing, and create a true sense of belonging.

The Indi Club has become a vital part of the Hubb Club project, offering a lifeline to adults at high risk of isolation. The club provides a safe and welcoming space filled with opportunities to connect, take part in meaningful activities, and feel part of a community. “I like working here because every single day is completely different,” one team member shared. “We see so many different people and I truly feel we help make their lives fuller.” With its supportive atmosphere and family-like feel, The Indi Club continues to show how powerful friendship, care, and daily connection can be.

Chell Area Family Action Group has been a key part of the Hubb Club project, offering direct support to 69 isolated residents with the help of their nine incredible volunteers. Their work spans from friendly phone calls and home visits to shopping trips and appointment support – small acts that make a big difference in helping people feel less alone. But it’s not just about practical help. As one participant shared, “I came in struggling with my mental health and burst out crying. They took me into the office, talked with me, and offered to visit me at home. Instead, I kept coming back and that gave me a reason to keep going.” Since then, the centre has become a safe, familiar place, where the relationships formed feel more like family than support services.

Port Vale FC Foundation has been a committed partner in delivering The Hubb Club project, to tackle loneliness across Stoke-on-Trent. Their team of dedicated staff and volunteers support individuals through friendly check-ins, phone calls, and warm invitations to join community sessions creating opportunities for people to feel included and valued.

One story from the Golden Valiants group captures the impact perfectly: “The first day I came, I was nervous, but everyone made me feel really welcome. Now I come every Thursday, and I look forward to it.” A team member shared, “This partnership keeps us going. It gives us purpose, and we all support each other.” Their message is simple: whether you need connection or want to give back, there’s a place for you.
