Carol Shanahan OBE Awarded Honorary Freedom of Stoke-on-Trent

This week marks a proud and historic moment for Stoke-on-Trent, not only as the city celebrates 100 years since receiving official city status, but as it honours one of its most inspiring leaders – Carol Shanahan OBE, Founder and Patron of The Hubb Foundation, who is being awarded the Honorary Freedom of the City.

More Than a Founder – The Heart of The Hubb

Carol’s journey with The Hubb Foundation began in 2018 when she founded the charity with one goal in mind: to ensure that no child in Stoke-on-Trent is left behind. Her vision was simple but powerful; provide support to families during school holidays through food, care, and enriching activities.

Carol’s values were never more evident than during the COVID-19 pandemic. She transformed Port Vale Football Club, which she co-owns, into a vital community support centre. Working in collaboration with The Hubb Foundation, over 600,000 meals were delivered to families across the city, alongside educational packs, digital tools, and hygiene essentials.

Her ability to rally people together – volunteers, businesses, and community leaders has shown not just great leadership, but genuine care for the people of Stoke-on-Trent.

As a Trustee and now our Patron, Carol has never stopped championing the values of dignity, equity, and compassion. Her belief in the power of community has shaped everything we do.

In the words of our CEO, Adam Yates:
“Carol is not just the founder of The Hubb Foundation – she’s been central in the mission from day one. Her belief in the power of community, and in the potential of every child, has shaped everything we do. We are proud beyond words to see her honoured in this way.”

“We are very lucky to have Carol not only advocating for our city but advocating for giving opportunity to everyone within it. Her vision for the Hubb Foundation, Port Vale FC and Stoke-on-Trent is truly admirable. As chair of the Hubb Foundation I would like to say on behalf of the board how proud we are of our Patron, and it is a very thoroughly deserved award. Congratulations Carol”
Chair of Trustees, Jane Sawyers.

A Well-Deserved Honour

The Honorary Freedom of Stoke-on-Trent is the city’s highest civic honour, and no one deserves it more. Carol’s name now joins the history books alongside other individuals who have shaped the heart and future of our city.

Alongside her OBE and honorary doctorates from Keele and Staffordshire Universities, this Freedom of the City recognises not just her past achievements, but the enduring legacy she continues to build.

As Stoke-on-Trent reflects on 100 years of city status, it does so with a renewed sense of pride led by individuals like Carol who are shaping the future for the better.

On behalf of everyone at The Hubb Foundation – thank you Carol, and Congratulations. 💛
