Leading the Way with Bee Active’s Sports Leadership Programme

Now that this year’s Summer HAF programme has come to an end and we await the final feedback from providers and families, it feels like the perfect time to pause and reflect.

Following on from the success of the Sports Leaders Level 1 Programme in 2024, Bee Active offered those young people aged 12 to 16 the chance to progress through the nationally accredited Level 2 Sports Leadership qualification, as part of the Easter HAF 2025 Programme.

Building on Strong Foundations

The aim of the Level 2 programme was simple but ambitious – by creating a progression pathway, the course ensured that older HAF eligible learners could continue their development, enhancing not just their sporting knowledge but also key life and employability skills.

From communication and teamwork to responsibility and resilience – the weeklong programme blended theory and practice, pushing participants to think, plan, and act like real leaders.

The course wasn’t just about sitting in a classroom. Sixteen returning learners took part in a packed easter timetable that included:

Icebreakers and team building tasks

✅ Session planning and sports delivery

✅ Peer feedback and reflective practice

✅ Theory work around balance, coordination, and movement

With guidance from Bee Active mentors, they led younger children in holiday club sessions and even contributed to a live community event, putting their skills to the test in real life settings.

Outcomes That Last Beyond Easter

The benefits of the programme went far beyond earning a certificate – since the course, young leaders reported feeling better equipped to take on responsibilities whether in sport, at school, or within their wider communities.

Building on the success and positive stories from the Easter HAF Programme, we have been delighted to collaborate once again with Bee Active this summer to support another cohort of young people on their journey to becoming Sports Leaders.

And this group has recently completed the nationally accredited Level 1 Leadership Skills Foundation Qualification – the starter course designed to develop communication, organisation, and confidence through sport.

Covering two core units, Establishing Leadership Skills and Planning, Assisting in Leading, and Reviewing Activity Sessions, the programme has once again provided young people with both valuable knowledge and hands on experience.
